NEW BACKUP GUIDE AVAILABLE

Before you read any further, follow the link below to download our new backup guide.

http://www.schedulestar.com/PDF/bkpguide.pdf

ALL USERS SHOULD READ THIS DOCUMENT. Read it. Save it. Print it for future reference. If you read these five pages and follow the instructions and recommendations about making backups, you should NEVER lose ANY of your valuable Schedule Star data.

The new guide covers every aspect of Schedule Star's built-in backup utility, including our recommended schedule for making backups, using backups to work at home and at school, and other precautions you should take to protect your data. We also tear apart the myths and excuses we've heard from users who are not making backups.

If you've never made a backup, there's never been a better time to start than now using the new guide. If you've been faithfully making backups every day since the first time you loaded Schedule Star, find out some facts about making backups that you never knew.

Also available from the Documentation page of our Support site are two new guides aimed at current and/or former Macintosh users. Although the Macintosh edition of Schedule Star was discontinued on August 4, 2000, several Mac users have had success running the latest Windows version using emulators like Virtual PC. For more information, check out our fact sheet at:

http://www.schedulestar.com/PDF/emulator.pdf

Several of our client schools are rapidly abandoning their Macintosh systems altogether in favor of Windows computers. If a Windows PC is in your near future, you can bring all your Schedule Star data over from the Mac to the Windows version without losing a single scheduled game while gaining over 80 new program features. View the instructions for converting your data at:

Palm Pilot Update:

We are working furiously, and will start shipping product the middle of this month. The application for the Palm itself is complete, and we are firming up the "Hot-Sync" conduits that will synchronize between the Desktop computer and the Palm.

Watch here for more information.

STUDENT IMPORT REVISITED

Schedule Star's student import feature can save you considerable time. Bringing your entire student body and related information into Schedule Star in one operation saves you hours of entering each individual student and his or her information one field at a time in the Student Directory.

However, several schools have experienced problems obtaining the data in the proper format from their student database systems, whether in-house or maintained by their vocational/technical school or other off-site organization.

If the conversion is not being handled in-house, we will be happy to answer questions and provide instructions and sample files for the person responsible for obtaining and converting your student information. However, we CANNOT provide support for student database systems. There are literally hundreds of different programs and systems for maintaining student records. Our tech support team cannot be expected to be familiar with all of them. We CANNOT provide support for extracting the files from your system. Similarly, if you are experiencing problems or delays in obtaining the proper file, we cannot intervene on your behalf or provide support outside of that mentioned above.

To date, every student system we know of, without exception, has an export function that will provide a file that can be manipulated in a spreadsheet program.

If you are familiar with Microsoft Excel or an equivalent spreadsheet program, you may want to attempt to convert the data yourself, especially if the person responsible for your student information is unwilling or unable to provide you with a properly formatted file.

Once you import the data they provide into a spreadsheet, copy the header row from our sample file (located on the Schedule Star CD in the Students folder). At this point, it typically becomes a simple matter of rearranging the data into the correct columns and possibly reformatting some dates. Again, we will be happy to answer general questions regarding the correct format, but we CANNOT provide support for your spreadsheet software.

When you are finished, save the spreadsheet as a CSV (comma-delimited) file. Open Schedule Star, MAKE A BACKUP, then run the import routine from the Utilities menu. The import routine will give you a preview of the first and last record to be imported, letting you cancel the import if you see a formatting mistake.
